[Review] His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

Exemplary writing. Everything is very well-composed and plotted. And there are a lot of vivid details that help paint a rich picture of the environment and events as the story unfolds.

But, as good as the writing is, this book is thick with religious machinations and allusions. For me, it felt almost political in nature, which really slowed down the pace of the book. So, while I fully respect the writing and storytelling, the subject matter for this one just wasn't in my wheelhouse.
