There is a lot of love in this book. Dark academia. Secret societies. Hidden histories. And queer characters. It is a dark and twisted reminder of the power and corruption of money. And it does a very good job of capturing the isolation, loneliness, and awkwardness of being an outsider trying to fit into the classed structure of wealth and privilege.

This book was an intriguing combination of a crime thriller and a ghost story. Dark and gritty. I was excited by the Korean setting and the ensuing cultural references, particularly those of Korean shamanism.

A compelling murder mystery made all the more fabulous by its diverse cast of characters. Fun and whimsical. Serious and tense. This was an engaging and fast-paced read for me, and I never did figure out the whodunit.

This book has the feel of a classic Gothic horror story, but with a noticeable update. Instead of outdated gender stereotypes, Kingfisher employs a very modern, nonbinary gender model for the main character, adding to its present-day appeal.

Fast paced and engaging. Modern and relevant. I thought this book did a great job of capturing the homophobia that is prevalent in much of small-town America.
