Very good writing. This isn't my usual genre or subject matter, but there is a lot to love about this book. The plot is cohesive and compelling, and there is great character development. Yet the subtext is where this book really shines.

Everything about this book is a testament to the importance of equality. In case anyone has forgotten how misogynistic and racist the 50s were, this book with remind you. At first I was a little grossed out by it, but then I realized that this book is a good example of a “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” type book—and in that sense, the misogyny and racism do serve as a fitting reminder that we should always be vigilant and fight for human rights and equality.

Also, the main character—who is brilliant and surpasses many of her male counterparts in both knowledge and hands-on experience—has social anxiety. It is a big part of her character. But this book illustrates how fundamentally flawed thinking is when judging people based on their disability.

A very human novel that reminds us of compassion and the dangers of bigotry.
