Vivid descriptions. The writing is lush, with excellent worldbuilding. The characters are engaging and fully-developed—Tom Bombadil was a great favorite. And one thing that is rather unique to the series, are the number of delightful poems/songs that are scattered throughout the writing.
The whole thing is lovely.
Note: If you listen to audio books, pick up the version with Andy Serkis as the narrator. He is beyond amazing—best I've come across so far.
