[Review] Dracula by Bram Stoker

I read this book many years ago, but it remains one of my favorite pieces of Victorian literature. Rich, detailed, and eloquent language. Creepy themes and an intriguing premise. This book has inspired so much of our modern vampire literature and movies. A fantastic Gothic novel and a great example of classic literature. Compared to other Victorian novels, this is a 5 star read, hence my rating.

For the modern reader however, there are things of note. Like most classics, the pacing is slow. During some scenes, I was entirely engaged. Others... felt unnecessary and boring, and my mind wandered. The format (letters, diary entries, etc) and point of view swapping was distracting and contributed to the slow pacing of the book. Some of these sections are a slog.

As a classic piece of literature, this is an excellent example. And as a historical text that has inspired so much of our modern horror literature and movies, few others have had such a noticeable impact.
